About the project

NFL on the Run is a project focused on non-formal learning as a living and dynamic practice. It brings together organisations working with young people across different fields to explore how learning happens beyond formal settings and how it can be supported in everyday practice. NFL on the Run stands on the theoretical framework developed within the previous project Youth Runner. While the framework has been further expanded and adapted through practice, the original publication remains a useful reference for understanding the project’s conceptual foundations.

The project builds on previous work in the field of non-formal learning and youth work, and responds to the diversity of contexts in which young people learn, participate and develop. It connects experience, reflection and action through collaboration, research and exchange. Through the project, partners developed a set of practical resources, including podcasts, Areas of Practice, methods and workshops, Navigation Cards and an online training course. These outputs are designed to be flexible and adaptable, allowing users to choose how and where they engage with them.

NFL on the Run sees learning as something that happens in motion, through relationships, challenges and real situations. The project supports exploration, shared understanding and the exchange of practices across different sectors working with young people.

Timeline

NFL on the Run was developed through a long and iterative process that combined research, exchange, co-creation and extensive testing with people working with young people across different fields. The project started in September 2024 with a kick-off meeting in Slovenia, where partner organisations aligned their understanding of non-formal learning as a practice that happens across many contexts, not only within youth work structures. From autumn 2024 until the end of the year, the partnership conducted interviews with a wide range of organisations working with young people who do not necessarily identify as youth work organisations. These included, among others, firefighters, scout groups, theatre organisations, sports clubs and organisations working with young people with disabilities. The interviews focused on collecting practical experience, approaches and methods, as well as understanding which themes organisations consciously address and which tend to remain implicit or overlooked. This phase helped identify shared practices, blind spots and differences in how key themes are approached. Based on these insights, an initial set of areas of practice was refined and reshaped. Some areas were renamed or adjusted to better reflect how they are understood and lived in different contexts.

From early 2025 until spring, the collected material was analysed and further developed. In May 2025, the partners met in Hungary to record the first series of podcasts. These were designed as conversations between people from youth work organisations and organisations from other fields, creating space for exchange between different perspectives and experiences. The podcasts were edited during the summer of 2025 and tested with external listeners from August to November. Feedback focused on clarity, relevance and usability, and informed further improvements. In November 2025, the partners met in Italy, where the remaining podcasts were recorded and the concepts for the method cards and the Navigation Cards were developed. In parallel, the collection of methods and approaches was finalised.

In December 2025, all methods were edited and harmonised to ensure consistent structure, language and style. In January 2026, the methods were translated into all project languages, and the graphic design of both card sets was completed. From February to March 2026, tutorial videos and promotional concepts were developed. At the end of March, the partners met in Serbia to review the printed cards, test the tutorials and further refine the materials. During this meeting, the concept for the online training course was also developed. The online training course was finalised in April 2026 and published on the HOP platform on 26 April 2026. From spring 2026 onwards, the cards, podcasts and methods were tested in practice through workshops and dissemination events organised by all partners at local and national level. These activities were supported by a wider dissemination campaign and continuous feedback from practitioners not directly involved in the project.
